Malaysia’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) industry is increasingly emerging as a vital pillar of national development, with the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) highlighting its expanding role in driving economic growth, innovation, and sectoral transformation.

According to projections, Malaysia’s MICE sector is expected to attract more than 25 million visitors and generate an estimated RM76.8 billion in revenue in the coming years. Dato’ Sri Dr Hj Irmohizam bin Ibrahim, Group Managing Director of WTCKL, underscored that Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, coupled with the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026, will provide a strong boost to business events, particularly within halal trade, the digital economy, and Islamic finance.

On the global stage, the MICE market is projected to reach US$590.67 billion by 2033, with the Asia-Pacific region commanding nearly 44% of the market share. Notably, sector-specific business events now account for more than 73% of bookings, reflecting growing demand from industries such as information technology, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing.

Dr Ibrahim emphasized that event venues must evolve beyond being mere infrastructure providers to becoming platforms of innovation, policy dialogue, and industry transformation. “Venues today need to act as connectors- linking stakeholders, shaping conversations, and serving as launchpads for emerging industries,” he said.

In line with this vision, WTCKL has invested heavily in smart infrastructure, including hybrid-enabled conference halls, advanced audio-visual systems, and high-speed digital connectivity. These upgrades are designed to support seamless large-scale events for both in-person and virtual participants. The centre has also taken strides to promote inclusivity by collaborating with local micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), giving them opportunities to showcase products, access vendor platforms, and participate in curated business matchmaking programmes.

The venue’s efforts have been recognised with several prestigious honours, including the “Best Established MICE Venue & Special Events” award at the Tourism Industry Awards 2025, as well as the Industry Outstanding Award (Service) from the Federation of Malaysian Business Associations.

At the regional level, WTCKL benefits from the support of the World Trade Centers Association® (WTCA®) through initiatives such as the “Road to 500” programme and active participation in the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS). These initiatives provide Malaysian stakeholders access to B2B matchmaking, export-readiness workshops, and inbound buyer missions, particularly aimed at strengthening MICE ecosystems in emerging markets.

Scott Wang, WTCA Vice President for Asia-Pacific, noted that a strong MICE industry plays a pivotal role in shaping a nation’s global reputation. “A vibrant MICE sector not only attracts investments and tourists but also fosters innovation and enhances economic resilience,” he said.
