Industry leaders across India’s creative and technology sectors have announced the formation of the Artificial Intelligence Association of India (AIAI), a new national body focused on guiding the ethical and innovation-led growth of AI within the country. Launched on November 24, the association is positioned as the first unified, industry-led effort to ensure that sectors such as advertising, film, music, and journalism thrive through AI adoption while safeguarding their cultural integrity.

The formation is driven by the aim to prevent India from becoming a “passive consumer” of AI technologies primarily developed in Silicon Valley. Dr. Sandeep Goyal, Managing Director of Rediffusion and the appointed National Convenor, emphasized during the launch that the initiative is as much about cultural preservation as it is about technology. The AIAI seeks to establish institutional guardrails that allow Indian industries to engage with artificial intelligence on their own terms.

The association has outlined five strategic objectives that will guide its operations, focusing on application and ethical governance rather than the hardware infrastructure supported by the government’s IndiaAI Mission.

First, the AIAI will engage in Policy and Advocacy, serving as a representative body for creative industries in discussions with key government entities, including MeitY and NITI Aayog, to ensure creative economy nuances are incorporated into AI laws. Second, it plans to establish a Certification Framework for ethical AI to maintain Ethical Standards across the industry. This is particularly relevant for managing issues like unauthorized voice and likeness replication (deepfakes).

Third, in a critical step for artists, the body will prioritize Protection of Intellectual Property (IP) by working to develop a “Creative AI Attribution Protocol.” This protocol is intended to update current copyright frameworks to ensure human creators receive attribution and compensation when their distinct styles are used by generative AI models.

The final two objectives focus on preparedness and localization. The AIAI has set a tangible goal for Skilling and Inclusion, aiming to train 10,000 creative professionals in AI tools by 2026. Lastly, the R&D and Innovation pillar will support local startups building “India-First” AI models capable of natively understanding the nation’s regional languages and diverse cultural contexts.

To operationalize these goals, the association plans to establish an Ethical Sandbox for safe AI testing and a National AI Incident Registry to publicly track misuses, thereby creating a permanent record of accountability for companies. Professionals are currently advised to await the formal announcement of the Governing Board and official communication channels before attempting to submit membership details or fees
